It’s Opening Night For Porgy & Bess

After beginning previews on December 17th, The Gershwins’ Porgy & Bess officially opens tonight at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre. The production stars Audra McDonald, Norm Lewis and David Alan Grier.

It’s anticipated that tonight’s audience will be filled with celebrities and VIPs. Among those expected to be in attendance are Liza Minnelli, Angela Lansbury, Spike Lee, Paul Simon, Matthew Broderick, Candice Bergen, Alan Alda and a laundry list of other “beautiful people.”

The Gershwins’ Porgy & Bess is set in Charleston’s fabled Catfish Row, where the beautiful Bess struggles to break free from her scandalous past, and the only one who can rescue her is the crippled but courageous Porgy. Threatened by her formidable former lover Crown, and the seductive enticements of the colorful troublemaker Sporting Life, Porgy and Bess’ relationship evolves into a deep romance that triumphs as one of theater’s most exhilarating love stories.

Porgy and Bess originally premiered in New York in the fall of 1935. It featured an entire cast of classically trained African-American singers, a creative decision considered very daring for the times.
