Despite the credibility lent to the show when Elton John and his partner, David Furnish, signed on as producers, Next Fallwill close on July 4th after just 132 regular performances.
The show is a comedy-drama by Geoffrey Nauffts about a gay couple tested by religious differences and interfering family and friends. It debuted at Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theatre on March 11th of this year to virtually unanimous critical acclaim. But despite garnering a Tony Award nomination for Best Play, the production never really caught on commercially. It’s said that backers lost their entire two million dollar investment.
Producer Richard Willis told the Times that he plans to approach Elton John and David Furnish about launching Next Fall in London. But for now, the curtain will close for the final time on Broadway on Sunday, July 4th.
